On their March 2007 trip to Antwerp, Belgium, Peter & Leanne Drane of Diamonds of Distinction, Buderim, had the pleasure of meeting with Gabi Tolkowsky. Gabi Tolkowsky is the world’s most famous diamond cutter, being invited to cut some of the largest & most expensive diamonds on the planet—the ‘Centenary Diamond’, the ‘Golden Jubilee’ & the ‘Pink Sun Rise’.

The Centenary Diamond started out as a 599 carat piece of rough & after Gabi worked his magic on it, he had transformed it into a polished D flawless 273 carat stone with 247 facets. It’s rumoured to have been sold in 1989 for $US100 million!

More than 80% of all rough diamonds are first traded in the Antwerp diamond district, which is why Antwerp is known as the ‘Diamond Capital’ of the world.

Following a presentation which included exact replicas of both the rough & finished polished Centenary Diamond, Peter & Leanne were not only lucky enough to meet the man himself, but were enthralled when Gabi Tolkowsky actually joined them for dinner! Peter says meeting the legendary Gabi was a real privilege. His knowledge & ability to create the most beautiful diamond is simply amazing. In the early 1920’s, Gabi’s Great Uncle invented the ‘Tolkowsky Cut’ which is the round brilliant cut still used for most diamonds today. Since the 1920’s, millions of dollars have been spent trying to find an even better way of cutting diamonds to improve their reflection & brilliance. Despite the toil, time & effort, no-one has yet figured out how to do it better & the Tolkowsky Cut is still the most popular way to cut diamonds, nearly 90 years later.
